Weather routing is a key technological component of sail-powered transport. The fuel savings generated by using wind vary greatly and depend on multiple factors, especially the region, the season, and the operating speed. On the same journey, the fuel savings can be extensive if the winds are favourable, yet limited if the winds are non-existent or in the wrong direction.


Knowledge of the journeys and the weather systems the ship will meet en route is a primary factor in calculating the wind power required in addition to the propeller. To reliably determine the power generated by sails on a specific route or an operating region, we use a statistical weather routing tool developed by our partners D-Ice Engineering. Using performance forecasts for the ship under sail (polar) and based on wind statistics for the past ten years, it is possible to accurately estimate the fuel savings achievable on a given shipping line.


We can therefore determine ahead of time the degree of opportunity for a shipping line and more accurately budget the economic relevance of a shipping line. Once the ship is operating, the routing tool can also be used to determine the best route to take and the engine operations required to draw the most benefit from the winds on the route.
